The first post office was established October 28, 1875, in Mount
Sneffels, Colorado, a town that no longer exists. Originally, Otto Mears was responsible for mail delivery. The first official postmaster was
William H. Stoddard, 1877. Mail delivery was difficult back in those days because of blizzards, avalanches, and bad roads. Still, there were many small post offices around the mines in Ouray.
